Yesterday I took a lady out for her first round ever. We had done a couple of lessons and it was time to bring her to a par 3 course. Note—never bring someone out to a full length course for their first time. I went through my usual spiel about getting behind the shot and thinking of your target more than your swing—have a routine. The hole was 114 yards and the ground was hard so I decided to bump in a little pitching wedge. You could see the flag on the green but not the base of the pin. I played a little grandpa shot in there that looked like it had a chance, but you could not tell if it went in.
She then did as she was told and topped it about ten yards. She went and played a couple more shots until we were able to have her bump one on the green. I noticed that my ball was not visible and that it had probably run into the rough behind the green. I did not give it much thought as I was trying to get this gal through her first hole without hating it. Well, the ball was not over the green—checked the hole—amazing. The first hole she ever played with somebody she saw a hole in one. In over thirty five years of playing it was my second. I have never witnessed one by another player. I think it was good coaching.
